Shifting Sounds – on the possibilities of sound and music in visual arts

The Structure of the World, Revealed through Music Experimental Workshop with Annika Kahrs

A report on the talk and workshop “Shifting Sounds – on the possibilities of sound and music in visual arts” held by Mercedes-Benz Art Scope in collaboration with EWS, has been published.

■ Website:
https://www.mercedes-benz.co.jp/passengercars/brand/csr/2025/artist-0228.html

■ Objective:
A program of Mercedes-Benz Japan to promote cultural and artistic activities, “Mercedes-Benz Art Scope” has been supporting the endeavors of young artists from Japan and Europe through overseas residencies for more than thirty years. Associated with Tama Art University since 2022, Mercedes-Benz Art Scope exchange programs for artists from Japan and Germany were further expanded to include workshops at the university, as occasions for sharing experiences with artists from the next generation. One of the participants from Germany in 2022-2024 was Annika Kahrs, who came to Tokyo for two and a half months in September 2024, whereby she conducted research broadly related to sound. In late November, during the final stage of her stay, Kahrs was invited as instructor for the Tama Art University Graduate School’s Experimental Workshop, and the talk session and workshop “Shifting Sounds – on the possibilities of sound and music in visual arts” were held with the artist’s participation.

■Location:Tama Art University, Hachioji Campus
Art-Théque Building 3rd Floor (22-308, 22-309)

■Exhibitors:
“Memories of the City”, EWS in Berlin
Experimental Workshop members of Chiharu Shiota (Specially Appointed Prof.) in 2024
“The Silent Workshop”, EWS in Thailand
Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Specially Appointed Prof.) in 2023

■Outline:
Experimental Workshop (EWS) is a unique program in various ways, particularly for the fact that we do not require students to produce any tangible works during the 10-day workshops. As graduate students, we trust that all of the participants engage deeply with the content of the workshop, and take it as an opportunity to re-evaluate their creative practice, and to challenge themselves to find their own path to meaningful experimentation. The true outcomes of this level of engagement cannot be measured through a short-term assignment, but rather the results will become visible in the years to come as each graduate enters the national and global stages in art and design.

However, this exhibition is an opportunity, a milestone perhaps, for EWS students to present their development so far. It will give you a glimpse into the early stages of development, the first steps, that each of the participants has taken in response to their engagement with EWS. You will see the strength and individuality of each creator, and gain some insight to the themes, issues and explorations, the long conversations and introspection, the new experiences and challenges, that emerged from this year’s intensive workshops.
